The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (‘TSMIT’) is the minimum salary payable to a sponsored employee for Employer Sponsored Visas, that is subclass 482 TSS, 494 SESR, 186 ENS or 187 RSMS visas.
This requirement serves as an indicator that the nominated position is sufficiently skilled to be eligible for the Employer Sponsored Visa Programme. Additionally, it ensures that overseas workers have reasonable means of support and are self-reliant, discouraging any pressure to breach their visa conditions.
The TSMIT has been unchanged for the past decade at A$53,900 and has been the subject to numerous criticism for being a poor measure of skills, as most workers earn more than this amount.
NEW UPDATE
On 5 May 2023, the Department of Home Affairs announced an increase of the TSMIT requirement to A$70,000, effective 1 July 2023. This increase raises the minimum salary that Australian employers are required to pay to its sponsored overseas workers.
Therefore, any new nomination applications lodged on or after 1 July 2023 must propose a base salary of at least A$70,000 in order to participate in the Employer Sponsored Visa Programme.
However, nomination applications lodged before 1 July 2023 will not be affected.
