Upcoming Changes to Australia’s migration programs in 2024

MIGRATION LAW is known for its constant changes – there are amendments to laws and policy; occupations are added and removed from the skilled occupation list; the minimum salary requirements are increased; and sometimes, entire visa subclasses are uprooted and replaced.

2024 is shaping up to be no different with the recent release of the Migration Strategy by the Australian Government setting out the key actions proposed.

  1. Targeting temporary skilled migration with the introduction of a new Skills in Demand visa
  2. Reshaping permanent skilled migration by reviewing the points system and implementing a new Talent and Innovation visa
  3. Strengthening the integrity and quality of international education by keeping education providers in check and opening doors for migration pathways for international students
  4. Tackling worker exploitation to ensure that abuse of power and the migration system is curtailed
  5. Planning migration to ensure long-term effective support of skills shortage
  6. Tailoring regional visas and Working Holiday Maker programs to ensure adequate support in regional Australia
  7. Deepening ties and establishing greater mobility between our Indo-Pacific neighbours including New Zealand and other Southeast Asian countries
  8. Simplifying the migration system in hopes to make it easier to use

The Australian Government has already commenced implementation of some of the above commitments, with others changes to come into effect by the end of 2024.

Continue to watch this space as more developments occur across the next 12 months.
